It is a writing skill before it is a production skill, and it separates a video that is finished from one that is abandoned.

This guide is for teachers, content coordinators and platform writers who turn a lesson into a short clip. If you already have files, start with [repurposing educational content](/en/blogs/transforming-pdf-into-video), and if your draft comes from an automated tool read [AI tools for teachers](/en/blogs/free-ai-tools-voiceover-scriptwriting) first.

- <span style="font-size: 1.4rem; line-height: 1.2;">1️⃣</span> <span style="font-size: 1.1rem; line-height: 1.6; color: #4a5568;">**One idea per clip:** Do not cram five theories into one video; what does not serve the single sentence is cut or postponed.</span>
- <span style="font-size: 1.4rem; line-height: 1.2;">🎣</span> <span style="font-size: 1.1rem; line-height: 1.6; color: #4a5568;">**The first seconds:** Open with a question or situation; they decide whether the student carries on.</span>
- <span style="font-size: 1.4rem; line-height: 1.2;">🗣️</span> <span style="font-size: 1.1rem; line-height: 1.6; color: #4a5568;">**For hearing, not reading:** Short sentences that are easy to say; try them aloud.</span>
- <span style="font-size: 1.4rem; line-height: 1.2;">🖼️</span> <span style="font-size: 1.1rem; line-height: 1.6; color: #4a5568;">**Write for what is drawn:** A note beside each sentence of what appears on screen now.</span>

</div>Why is a book not a script?
---------------------------

A textbook assumes a reader who can stop, go back and reread. A video is watched once at a fixed pace. Reading a page as it is to a camera loses the student's focus fast, not because the content is weak but because the structure of an academic sentence is not made for hearing. The instructional script is the same information in short sentences and in an order that serves understanding rather than the academic order.

<div class="blog-table-wrap"><table class="table table-bordered"><thead><tr><th>In the book</th><th>In the script</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>“Force is an agent that changes a body's state of motion”</td><td>A child pushes a heavy cart and it does not move, then a friend pushes with him and it does. Then: “this push is what we call a force”</td></tr><tr><td>A paragraph of five sentences joined by connectives</td><td>Three short sentences, each an idea, with what appears on screen beneath</td></tr><tr><td>A historical introduction before the idea</td><td>The idea first, and the history comes when it serves understanding</td></tr><tr><td>A list of seven items</td><td>Three items in one clip and the rest in the next</td></tr></tbody></table>

</div>Steps to write the script
-------------------------

1. **Fix the single idea:** what is the one thing the student must leave this clip with? Write it in a sentence, and cut or postpone to another clip whatever does not serve it.
2. **Write the hook opening:** do not begin with “in this lesson we will learn…”. Begin with a puzzling question, an everyday situation or a paradox. The student decides in the first seconds.
3. **Turn definitions into examples:** instead of “force is…” show a situation where force appears and then name it. The student understands from the example before the definition.
4. **Write for what is drawn:** put beside each sentence what appears on screen. If there is nothing to draw, the sentence may be superfluous.
5. **Close with a short summary:** one sentence that restates the idea, preferably in the voice of the same character if there is one.
6. **Read it aloud and set the length:** at a natural pace, and time it. If it passes the target length, cut rather than speed up.

What does research say about language level by age?
---------------------------------------------------

Here we separate what a study said, whose abstract we read, from what we recommend.

- **What the study found:** A recent study of children aged four to six found that the younger ones keep listening to simple speech longer, while older ones gradually turn to more complex speech (Foushee and colleagues).
- **Our recommendation:** Write each age at its own language level: familiar words and short sentences for the youngest, gradual complexity for older children, and one idea per clip.

<small>Source (we read its abstract): [Foushee and colleagues, Developmental Science](https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/desc.70014).</small>

Applying this to a video for children in Arabic, from choosing simplified standard Arabic or a dialect to pacing by age, is in [educational videos for children in Arabic](/en/blogs/how-to-design-educational-videos-for-children-in-arabic-using-animation).

Examples of openings that grip the student
------------------------------------------

- A puzzling question: “Why does the bulb not light although we connected it to the battery?”
- An everyday situation: “When you spill water on the floor, how does it disappear after some hours?”
- A paradox: “Heavier than air, so how does an aeroplane fly?”
- A problem that needs solving: “You have three steps to reach the result, so which do you begin with?”

How do you know the script is ready?
------------------------------------

- Read it to someone from outside the subject; if they grasp the idea and follow without boredom, the script is ready.
- Ask them afterwards for the single idea; if they name two different ideas the clip needs splitting.
- Look for a sentence with nothing on screen to match it; it is a candidate for cutting.
- Watch the first two sentences; if they sound familiar like any lesson, the opening needs changing.
- Check every fact and definition with the subject expert before drawing, not after.

Common mistakes in instructional scripts
----------------------------------------

- **More than one idea in a clip:** so the student leaves with nothing. Give each clip an idea and the wider idea a series.
- **An opening of “in this lesson we will learn”:** it announces boredom. Begin with the situation.
- **A definition before an example:** it is hard to grasp. Show the situation, then name it.
- **Writing in the language of the book:** then simplifying it during recording. Write at the intended level from the start.
- **A script that does not know what is drawn:** so the scene stays a person talking. Write the note beside each sentence.
- **Speeding up the reading to fit the length:** cut instead of speeding up.

Suppose a lesson on the electric circuit is first written in the language of the book: the definition of current, then its types, then a law. After re-engineering, the clip opens with a question: why does the bulb not light although we connected the battery? It shows the open circuit, then the circuit is closed and the bulb lights, then it names the concept and closes with one sentence. The theory and the law are left to the next two clips. This is a hypothetical example to show the method, not something that happened.

How we work on scripts
----------------------

Hawadet Studio is an early-stage Arabic animation studio. We learned that the foundation means writing carefully and reviewing the plot, the dialogue and the historical details of the characters, that however long it takes it is the main factor in whether the work is accepted, and that it saves effort in every later stage. The biggest mistake that forced us to redo work was rushing these steps to save time.

So every piece of ours goes through a reviewed script before the storyboards, then storyboards, then an animatic to settle the rhythm, before hand-drawn animation begins. Our work is on the [projects page](/en/projects).

Frequently Asked Questions
--------------------------

### Who writes the script, us or the studio?

It is best if your team writes the scientific draft to ensure accuracy and the studio turns it into a visual script, or the studio writes and your expert reviews.

### What is the ideal length of one clip?

A clip that treats one idea is usually short. A longer lesson is split into clips with one idea each; set the length by the students' age and your experience with them.

### How do I know the script is good before production?

Read it to someone from outside the subject. If they grasp the idea and follow without boredom, the script is ready; if they drift, reorder it.
