This needs cultural reference in the details, a deliberate review of hidden values, pacing that suits the age, and a pilot episode shown to real children.

“Purposeful content” is a phrase often said and little understood. This guide is for whoever produces, buys or chooses children's series for their family or school, and wants to know the difference between a series that carries value and one that preaches or is empty. For stage-by-stage safety review read [ensuring safe content for children](/en/blogs/ensuring-safe-content-for-children-in-animation-projects), and for channels and platforms [values-aligned animation](/en/blogs/islamic-animation-children-production-guide).

- <span style="font-size: 1.4rem; line-height: 1.2;">🎭</span> <span style="font-size: 1.1rem; line-height: 1.6; color: #4a5568;">**Value inside the plot:** The child learns from the characters' choices and their consequences, not from a direct sermon.</span>
- <span style="font-size: 1.4rem; line-height: 1.2;">😄</span> <span style="font-size: 1.1rem; line-height: 1.6; color: #4a5568;">**Enjoyment first:** The episode is enjoyable even if the child does not notice the message, or they will not watch it.</span>
- <span style="font-size: 1.4rem; line-height: 1.2;">🛡️</span> <span style="font-size: 1.1rem; line-height: 1.6; color: #4a5568;">**Free of harmful messages:** A deliberate review of hidden values, not just avoiding explicit scenes.</span>
- <span style="font-size: 1.4rem; line-height: 1.2;">🧪</span> <span style="font-size: 1.1rem; line-height: 1.6; color: #4a5568;">**Testing with children:** A pilot episode that shows whether the message arrives and the enjoyment is there.</span>

</div>Between direct preaching and emptiness
--------------------------------------

Much “purposeful” content falls into the trap of preaching: a character stops to explain the lesson to the viewer, the child feels lectured and loses interest. On the other side some entertainment passes values and messages that clash with the family's culture without the viewer noticing. What is wanted between them is an enjoyable plot that carries value naturally.

<div class="blog-table-wrap"><table class="table table-bordered"><thead><tr><th></th><th>Content that preaches</th><th>Purposeful content</th><th>Empty content</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>How the value appears</td><td>The character states it outright</td><td>It grows out of conflict and consequence</td><td>No intended value</td></tr><tr><td>How the child feels</td><td>Lectured, so bored</td><td>Enjoyment, then a conclusion</td><td>Passing amusement</td></tr><tr><td>The parents' role</td><td>They agree and the child feels pressure</td><td>They begin a conversation after the episode</td><td>They watch for what might slip through</td></tr><tr><td>The risk</td><td>The message does not arrive</td><td>Small, with review</td><td>Hidden messages nobody checks</td></tr></tbody></table>

</div>How is purposeful content built? Six steps
------------------------------------------

1. **Value comes from conflict, not dialogue:** if you want to teach honesty, do not have a character say “honesty is important”. Have a character lie, face the consequence of the lie, and then learn. The child draws the value themselves and it sticks.
2. **Cultural reference in the details:** names, homes, festivals, the way people speak and family relations let the child see themselves in the work, and are what separates local production from a dubbed one.
3. **Review hidden values:** what does the series reward implicitly? What model of heroism does it offer? How does it portray authority, family and difference? These are reviewed in the script before production.
4. **Choose a narrow age group:** since each group's needs differ in narrative complexity, pacing and kind of values.
5. **Fix the characters with a written bible:** a temperament known in advance makes reviewing a character's behaviour easier.
6. **Test a pilot episode with children:** before producing the whole season.

What does research say about pacing for young children?
-------------------------------------------------------

Here we separate what a study said, whose abstract we read, from what we recommend.

- **What the study found:** In an experiment published in Pediatrics in 2011, sixty four-year-olds watched nine minutes of a fast-paced cartoon, and straight afterwards did worse on self-control and working-memory tasks than children who watched a calm educational cartoon or drew (Lillard and Peterson). The study measured only the immediate effect.
- **Our recommendation:** Speed is not a sign of quality; we recommend giving each scene time to be understood, with longer shots, fewer cuts, and movement that serves the idea rather than crowding it.

<small>Source (we read its abstract): [Lillard and Peterson, Pediatrics](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9923845/).</small>

For designing a video for children in Arabic and pacing by age, see [educational videos for children in Arabic](/en/blogs/how-to-design-educational-videos-for-children-in-arabic-using-animation).

Questions to review the script with before production
-----------------------------------------------------

- What value does the episode intend, and does it grow out of a character's choice and its consequence?
- Is there a line that states the value outright and could be cut without losing the idea?
- What behaviour is rewarded in the story, and do you want the child to imitate it?
- How are family, authority and difference between people portrayed?
- Does the episode mock a group, an accent or a look?
- Does the child in the episode appear as a decision-maker or only as a recipient?

How do you know your episode does not preach?
---------------------------------------------

- Cut the line that states the value outright: if the idea stays clear from the events, the plot carries it.
- Ask a child after watching “why did the character do that?” and notice whether they explain the consequence in their own words.
- Make sure the character who errs is not punished harshly and that the learning comes from experience.
- Watch the episode with the sound off: is the value understood from the picture and the action?

Common mistakes in purposeful content
-------------------------------------

- **A sermon inside the episode:** so the child loses interest. Let the value grow out of the plot.
- **Value with no enjoyment:** so the child does not watch it at all.
- **Importing a plot with no cultural review:** so messages that do not suit the family pass.
- **Changing a character's behaviour between episodes:** so the meaning of the value is lost. Adopt a character bible.
- **Ignoring pacing:** which affects how little ones take in the episode before the message.
- **Producing the season before testing an episode:** so the problem is found after it has repeated.

Suppose a series about honesty for first-graders. Instead of the character saying “honesty is important”, a character lies over something small, things get tangled, it feels embarrassed, and then it tells its friend and the situation improves. The pilot episode is shown to children and they are asked simple questions about what happened and why. This is a hypothetical example to show the method, not an existing episode.

How do we build value in our work?
----------------------------------

Hawadet Studio is an early-stage Arabic animation studio, and our works are our own original productions. In “The Hidden Kingdom”, our series about rabbits and falcons learning to live together under the guidance of a wise kingfisher, the value itself is the subject of the plot: living together across difference. The series has a written character bible that fixes each character's look and temperament.

And from what we have observed, a childlike voice attracts children more, and the younger they are the stronger the pull; we learned that choosing the voices is a decision that takes time no less than the drawing. Our work is reviewed in stages (the script first, then the storyboards, then the sound, then the final cut). Meet [The Hidden Kingdom](/en/projects/hidden-kingdom).

Frequently Asked Questions
--------------------------

### Is purposeful content less attractive than entertainment?

No, if it is built right. The problem is not having a value but delivering it as a sermon. A good plot carries the value without announcing it.

### Which age group is best to begin with?

Fix a narrow group instead of “all children”, since each group's needs differ in narrative complexity, pacing and kind of values.

### Do we need an educational adviser?

Very useful at the script stage to review how well the values and messages suit the age group. They can be part of your team or recommended by the studio.
