<div class="article-date"> Sep 06, 2026 <span style="margin: 0 8px; color: rgba(255,255,255,0.3);">|</span> <span style="color: rgba(255,255,255,0.4);">Hawadet Studio</span> </div> </div></div><div class="article-content-wrapper"><div class="blog-content">The cost of designing an exclusive cartoon character for a learning platform is made up of four items: exploration and design proposals, a full character sheet (expressions, angles, body language and colours), a technical setup so it can be animated quickly and consistently across lessons, and revision rounds. The price moves with the complexity of the style, the number of characters, the range of use and the number of rounds, and it is priced separately, once, with lessons then priced as if the character were ready.

An exclusive character is a one-off investment that serves every lesson and gives the curriculum an identity. But its cost confuses many because it gets mixed with the cost of producing lessons. This guide separates what you pay for the character design itself and what drives the price, without figures because the price follows your scope. For the whole library budget read [budgeting an animated educational content library](/en/blogs/understanding-motion-graphics-video-pricing), and for the educational decisions in designing the character [designing an educational character](/en/blogs/character-design-teachers).

- <span style="font-size: 1.4rem; line-height: 1.2;">✏️</span> <span style="font-size: 1.1rem; line-height: 1.6; color: #4a5568;">**Exploration and proposals:** Understanding the audience and the role, then first design proposals to choose between.</span>
- <span style="font-size: 1.4rem; line-height: 1.2;">📄</span> <span style="font-size: 1.1rem; line-height: 1.6; color: #4a5568;">**The full character sheet:** Expressions, angles, body language and colours named precisely, and everything animators need.</span>
- <span style="font-size: 1.4rem; line-height: 1.2;">🔧</span> <span style="font-size: 1.1rem; line-height: 1.6; color: #4a5568;">**Setup for animation:** Preparing the character technically so it can be animated quickly and consistently in hundreds of lessons.</span>
- <span style="font-size: 1.4rem; line-height: 1.2;">🔁</span> <span style="font-size: 1.1rem; line-height: 1.6; color: #4a5568;">**Revision rounds:** The number of rounds included in the design stage and the price of an extra one.</span>

</div>Why is the character not counted inside the lesson price?
---------------------------------------------------------

When you ask for the price of an “educational video with a character”, the price includes the whole character design. If you repeat that in every lesson the budget swells for no reason. The right way is to price the character as a separate one-off item, then price the lessons as if the character were ready.

<div class="blog-table-wrap"><table class="table table-bordered"><thead><tr><th></th><th>A character priced inside every lesson</th><th>A character priced as its own item</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>What you pay</td><td>A part of the design in each lesson</td><td>The design once, then a lesson at the cost of animation and sound</td></tr><tr><td>Clarity of the budget</td><td>Vague: you do not know how much went to the character</td><td>Clear: a foundation item and a lesson item</td></tr><tr><td>Ownership</td><td>May be muddled: what did you buy?</td><td>Written with the design item</td></tr><tr><td>Changing the character later</td><td>Paid for again and again</td><td>A calculated decision at a known cost</td></tr></tbody></table>

</div>What drives the price?
----------------------

1. **Complexity of the style:** a character with simple shapes and flat colours is quicker and easier than one with rich detail and shading. The simpler style is also cheaper in every later lesson because it is quicker to animate.
2. **Number of characters:** one guide character is far less than a crew (guide, learner and expert). Start with one and add only when the narrative needs it.
3. **Range of use:** a character that will appear in limited angles and movements is simpler than one needing a wide range of expression and motion. Define how it will really be used.
4. **Revision rounds:** the number of rounds included in the design stage affects the price. Ask for a clear number and a price for an extra round.
5. **Setup for animation:** the more a character is prepared for many movements, the more the work, but it saves time in every lesson.
6. **The role it plays:** a character that speaks, points and errs needs more expressions than a silent one in the corner.

Do not make “the cheapest” your aim here: a weak character is redone, and changing it after dozens of lessons touches all the assets. And we learned that the foundation, like the animatic, is one of the most important stages because everything after it is built on it. Think too about how long the character will be in use: one that will appear for years deserves a deeper design than one for a short campaign, and the investment decision follows the period it will really serve, not hopes of expansion.

What do you ask for in a character design quote?
------------------------------------------------

- A list of what is delivered: proposals, the character sheet, the animation setup and the source files.
- The number of first design proposals and of revision rounds included.
- A schedule for the design stage separate from lesson production.
- Who owns the character and its files and with what scope of use: all lessons, any platform, and for how long.
- How the character is tested before approval (its silhouette, at icon size, and in front of students).
- How the voice is treated: is it priced with the character or with the lessons?

How do you test the character before paying for its animation setup?
--------------------------------------------------------------------

- Show the silhouette alone: does the student recognise it from the outline?
- Shrink it to icon size: is it still readable on a phone screen?
- Ask for several expressions: surprise, puzzlement, joy. Does it look like the same character?
- Show it to students of the target grade and ask them its name and what it does.
- Read its dialogue aloud: do the look and the temperament fit?

Each of these tests is cheaper than finding the problem after the animation setup. So test before you approve, and write the results into the review notes so the studio knows what to adjust. Order the notes by importance and do not send contradictory changes in one round, since every round is counted in the price.

Common mistakes in pricing a character
--------------------------------------

- **Mixing the character's price with the lesson's:** so you do not know where the budget went.
- **Asking for a crew of characters from the start:** so the price rises and the student is distracted.
- **A style heavy with detail:** it raises the cost of every lesson, not just the design.
- **Neglecting the ownership item:** so you do not know where you may use it.
- **Changing the character after approval:** so you pay for a redesign and for redoing lessons.
- **A very small project with an exclusive character:** it may not justify the investment.

Suppose a language-learning platform will produce hundreds of lessons over years. It asks for one guide character in a simple flat style, prices it as a separate item with a sheet and setup, and sets a rule of two review rounds. It then prices the lesson as if the character were ready. This is a hypothetical example to show the method, not something that happened.

How do we design characters?
----------------------------

Hawadet Studio is an early-stage Arabic animation studio, and we do not show a price list. In “The Hidden Kingdom”, our original series, we keep a written character bible that fixes each character's look and temperament, and that is what we begin any work with: a character sheet before drawing. Our drawing is by hand, frame by frame.

And from what we have observed, a childlike voice attracts children more, and the younger they are the stronger the pull; so we treat the voice as part of the character's identity. Meet [The Hidden Kingdom](/en/projects/hidden-kingdom) and [Zaabeeb](/en/projects/zaabeeb).

Frequently Asked Questions
--------------------------

### Is the price fixed?

No. It ranges with the complexity of the style, the number of characters, the range of use and the revision rounds. Ask for a quote that itemises these elements rather than one total.

### Does designing a character save money in the long run?

It does if you have enough lessons: the character and the library are paid once, then each lesson pays animation and sound only. A very small project may not justify an exclusive character.

### Do we own the character completely?

This is a clause written into the contract: commercial-use and modification rights and the source files. Require what you need so you can expand or commission another party later.
