<div class="article-date"> Sep 04, 2026 <span style="margin: 0 8px; color: rgba(255,255,255,0.3);">|</span> <span style="color: rgba(255,255,255,0.4);">Hawadet Studio</span> </div> </div></div><div class="article-content-wrapper"><div class="blog-content">Designing an educational character starts from its function, not its look: what will this character do in every lesson? If it leads the student and asks what the student asks in their head, points to the important fact, or makes a mistake and corrects it in front of them, it is a learning tool. If it merely appears in the corner and smiles, it is a distracting decoration. After the function come the age, the ease of animation and the cultural fit.

This guide is for teachers, platforms and publishers who want a fixed character that appears in hundreds of lessons and gives the curriculum an identity students remember. We explain here the items of the character sheet, which is written before drawing, and for producing the series itself read [children's animation production basics](/en/blogs/learn-the-basics-of-childrens-animation-production-from-idea-to-screen).

<div style="background: #f8f9fa; border-left: 4px solid #7c3aed; padding: 25px; border-radius: 12px; margin: 35px 0; box-shadow: 0 4px 15px rgba(0,0,0,0.05); color: #1a202c;">### 📊 Functions of an educational character

- <span style="font-size: 1.4rem; line-height: 1.2;">🧭</span> <span style="font-size: 1.1rem; line-height: 1.6; color: #4a5568;">**The guide:** It leads the student through the lesson and asks the questions the student asks in their head.</span>
- <span style="font-size: 1.4rem; line-height: 1.2;">👀</span> <span style="font-size: 1.1rem; line-height: 1.6; color: #4a5568;">**Attention director:** Its gaze and gesture lead the student's eye to the important fact on screen.</span>
- <span style="font-size: 1.4rem; line-height: 1.2;">🪞</span> <span style="font-size: 1.1rem; line-height: 1.6; color: #4a5568;">**The stand-in learner:** It errs and corrects in front of the student, who learns that error is part of understanding, not a shame.</span>
- <span style="font-size: 1.4rem; line-height: 1.2;">🎙️</span> <span style="font-size: 1.1rem; line-height: 1.6; color: #4a5568;">**The voice of the subject:** A steady tone the student recognises that links the lessons together.</span>

</div>Why does a beautiful character with no role fail?
-------------------------------------------------

Much educational content adds a character “for decoration” that appears in the corner and smiles. The result is a visual element that distracts instead of helping. A character that serves learning is designed around a question: what will it do in every lesson? If it has no clear action (asks, points, tries, errs), it is decoration.

<div class="blog-table-wrap"><table class="table table-bordered"><thead><tr><th>Function</th><th>What the character does in the lesson</th><th>What its design needs</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Guide</td><td>Introduces the lesson, asks the question and leads the student to the next step</td><td>Friendly features, open body language, and a warm steady voice</td></tr><tr><td>Stand-in learner</td><td>Errs, corrects and asks the student's questions</td><td>Clear expressions of puzzlement and joy, and deliberate mistakes, not only funny ones</td></tr><tr><td>Subject expert</td><td>Gives the core fact and summarises it</td><td>A look that suggests confidence without condescension</td></tr><tr><td>Attention director</td><td>Points and looks at what the student should notice</td><td>Clear gestures that read on a small screen</td></tr></tbody></table>

</div>How is it designed? Four decisions
----------------------------------

1. **The age group sets the style:** for primary pupils, simple shapes, clear colours and large features. For teenagers, a more realistic and less childish design, or they reject it. Age is the first decision, not the last.
2. **Role before look:** fix the function (guide, stand-in learner, expert) and then design the look to serve it.
3. **Ease of animation and repetition:** the character will appear in hundreds of lessons, so it must be easy to animate and consistent from different angles. Extra detail slows production and raises the cost of every lesson.
4. **Cultural fit:** clothes, names and surroundings are all reviewed to suit your audience. A character that looks imported weakens the student's attachment.

What do you write in the character sheet before drawing?
--------------------------------------------------------

- **Name and role:** who it is in the lesson, and what it wants.
- **The look from several angles:** front, side and back, and the proportion of head to body.
- **Expressions:** joy, puzzlement, surprise and determination, as this particular character draws them.
- **Colours:** specific colours by name, not by impression. We recommend fixing each character's colour by name, since changing it between scenes weakens a child's recognition.
- **Temperament and way of speaking:** whether it speaks fast, repeats a phrase, how it laughs.
- **What it never does:** behaviours outside its temperament, which protects the character from contradiction between lessons written by different people.

This sheet is handed to everyone who works on the character, from the writer to the artist to the voice performer. For more on the rules of keeping a character consistent across a series, read [children's animation production basics](/en/blogs/learn-the-basics-of-childrens-animation-production-from-idea-to-screen).

How do you test a character before approving it?
------------------------------------------------

- Show its silhouette alone: does the student recognise it from the outline?
- Draw it small, at icon size: is it still readable on a phone screen?
- Ask the artist to draw it from memory a week later: does the same shape come out?
- Read two lines of its dialogue aloud: do the voice, look and temperament fit?
- Show it to students of the intended age and ask them its name and what it does.

One character or several? 2D or 3D?
-----------------------------------

Start with one character that plays the guide. Add a second (a stand-in learner or a friendly rival) only if the narrative needs dialogue. Too many characters too early raises cost and distracts the student. For the everyday school lesson hand-drawn 2D usually fits, since it holds the shape steadier and is quicker to produce than 3D, which usually suits cinematic and historical narrative.

Common mistakes in designing an educational character
-----------------------------------------------------

- **A character with no action:** it appears and only smiles. Ask what it will do in every lesson.
- **Too much detail:** it makes drawing it steadily in every shot hard. Begin with a simple shape that can be drawn from any angle.
- **An unsuitable age:** a childish character for teenagers or a realistic one for small children.
- **Changing the look between lessons or artists:** the student loses attachment. Adopt one sheet.
- **Neglecting the voice:** which is half of the character's identity. Choose a performer who suits its temperament.
- **Ignoring the cultural reference:** so the character seems foreign to its audience.

Suppose a mathematics platform for middle-school students wants a guide character. It decides the character leads the lesson, errs on one step and then corrects it, so it designs it with clear features and expressions of puzzlement and success, writes a character sheet with colours, language and what it never does, then shows the pilot lesson to students to see whether they follow it. This is a hypothetical example to show the method, not something that happened.

How we approach characters
--------------------------

Hawadet Studio is an early-stage Arabic animation studio. In “The Hidden Kingdom”, our original series about rabbits and falcons learning to live together under the guidance of a wise kingfisher, we keep a written character bible that fixes each character's look and temperament, and having it makes reviewing a character's behaviour easier because the temperament is known in advance. “Zaabeeb” is a 2D comedy series we own, with finished episodes.

Our drawing is by hand, frame by frame, and our voices are human. We learned that recording the voices and shaping the performance is a decision that needs time and a careful choice of artists, because sound is one of the most important quality factors. Frequently Asked Questions
--------------------------

### One character or several?

Start with one that plays the guide. Add a second only if the narrative needs dialogue, since too many characters early raises cost and distracts.

### Do we need a 3D design for the character?

For everyday school content, 2D usually fits for steadier shape and quicker production. 3D is generally used for cinematic and historical narrative.

### How long does the character design stage take?

It depends on the complexity of the style and the number of revisions, but it is a one-off investment that serves every lesson. Ask for a clear schedule for this stage, separate from lesson production.
