<div class="article-date"> Sep 07, 2026 <span style="margin: 0 8px; color: rgba(255,255,255,0.3);">|</span> <span style="color: rgba(255,255,255,0.4);">Hawadet Studio</span> </div> </div></div><div class="article-content-wrapper"><div class="blog-content">AI dubbing of video works for short informational content, trial versions and internal clips, and it needs a human performance in children's series, dramatic narrative, paid educational content and any work that depends on tone and feeling. The best practical approach is a mixed model: a first automated translation reviewed by a specialist translator and performed by people in the parts that need warmth.

This guide is for whoever wants to carry their video content into another language or dialect and to decide what to hand to a tool and what needs a person. We do not name particular tools or promise the accuracy of a particular language, since abilities change and differ between languages. For the wider picture of tools in the industry read [AI in animation](/en/blogs/ai-in-animation-industry).

- <span style="font-size: 1.4rem; line-height: 1.2;">🎙️</span> <span style="font-size: 1.1rem; line-height: 1.6; color: #4a5568;">**Human performance:** Children's series, dramatic narrative, paid educational content, and any work that depends on feeling and tone.</span>
- <span style="font-size: 1.4rem; line-height: 1.2;">🧪</span> <span style="font-size: 1.1rem; line-height: 1.6; color: #4a5568;">**A mixed model:** A first automated translation reviewed and tuned by a human translator and performer.</span>
- <span style="font-size: 1.4rem; line-height: 1.2;">🧭</span> <span style="font-size: 1.1rem; line-height: 1.6; color: #4a5568;">**Testing:** Show the version to people from the target language before launch.</span>

</div>Why is translation not just converting words?
---------------------------------------------

Automated dubbing is good at carrying literal meaning, but weak in three things: setting terms in their context (a word may mean two things), the performer's tone suited to the situation, and cultural fit in expressions and proverbs. In educational content one wrong term distorts the fact, and in children's content an automated tone loses the warmth that ties a child to the character.

<div class="blog-table-wrap"><table class="table table-bordered"><thead><tr><th>Type of content</th><th>Is automated dubbing enough?</th><th>What is needed</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>A short technical explanation</td><td>Often yes after review</td><td>An approved glossary and a human review</td></tr><tr><td>An informal internal clip</td><td>Mostly</td><td>A quick pronunciation test</td></tr><tr><td>A trial version to test rhythm</td><td>Yes</td><td>—</td></tr><tr><td>Paid educational content</td><td>Partly</td><td>A translator specialised in the subject and a scientific review of terms</td></tr><tr><td>Children's characters</td><td>Not advised</td><td>A human performer who suits the character and age</td></tr><tr><td>Dramatic dialogue or peak moments</td><td>Not advised</td><td>A human performance and direction</td></tr></tbody></table>

</div>How do you use automated dubbing wisely? Five steps
---------------------------------------------------

1. **Start with it as a draft:** produce a quick first version and have a specialist translator review the terms and the context.
2. **Prepare a glossary:** in educational content, write the approved terms in the target language and make sure the dubbing keeps to them.
3. **Use a human performance for the emotional parts:** dramatic dialogue, peak moments and children's characters, and leave the informational parts to the tool if the budget is tight.
4. **Listen to the whole file:** do not only read the translated text, since the fault may be in the pronunciation or the pause.
5. **Test with the target audience:** show the version to people from the target language before launch; they spot at once what seems “translated” or unnatural.

And if you produce in Arabic to begin with, decide the dialect or simplified standard Arabic before the writing, as covered in [educational videos for children in Arabic](/en/blogs/how-to-design-educational-videos-for-children-in-arabic-using-animation).

What does not carry over in translation?
----------------------------------------

- **Jokes and proverbs:** they need a cultural equivalent, not a literal translation.
- **Characters' names and their meaning:** they may carry a meaning in one language and not in another.
- **Poetic rhythm and songs:** they are rewritten, not translated.
- **Values and reference:** what suits one market may not suit another, so the version is reviewed against whoever will show it.
- **Sentence length:** languages differ, so a dubbed version needs mouth timing or text boards readjusted.

A review checklist for the dubbed version
-----------------------------------------

- Do the scientific terms match the approved glossary in the target language?
- Are characters' and places' names written and pronounced consistently?
- Is the tone right for the age of the audience and the nature of the situation?
- Does the dubbed sentence fit the timing of the picture and the mouth movement?
- Do proverbs and jokes have a cultural equivalent rather than a literal translation?
- Are the words suitable for the values of whoever will show it in the target market?
- Have you heard the whole file on headphones and on a phone speaker?

Record the review notes in one file with their date and the reviewer's name, since they are what you return to when you add a new language later.

And think about dubbing early if you know your work will reach more than one market. Write the text in sentences that do not rest on a pun, leave room in the picture for text that changes from one language to another, and do not write text on screen inside the drawing itself without a separate version of it. Each of these decisions saves you rework when you add a new language.

Common mistakes in dubbing content
----------------------------------

- **Relying on translation with no specialist translator:** so wrong terms carry over.
- **Dubbing children's characters automatically:** so the tone loses warmth.
- **Only reading the translated text:** without hearing the version.
- **Ignoring sentence length:** so the timing slips against the picture.
- **Not testing the version with native speakers:** before launch.
- **Assuming every language and dialect has the same quality:** since widely spoken languages usually perform better than local dialects.

Suppose an Arabic educational platform wants an English version of a science series. It starts with an automated translation, a scientific translator then reviews it and fixes the terms, the informational clips stay with a generated voice, and humans record the guide character. The version is then shown to English speakers before launch. This is a hypothetical example to show the method, not something that happened.

How we approach voice
---------------------

Hawadet Studio is an early-stage Arabic animation studio. In everything we make the voice performance is human, and we use AI only as an execution tool that turns the director's drawings into 3D environments in our cinematic line. We learned that recording the voices and shaping the performance is a decision that needs time and a careful choice of artists, not just any voice reading the text, and that weak sound costs the work a large part of the quality of the picture.

And from what we have observed, a childlike voice attracts children more, and the younger they are the stronger the pull. So we advise planning the voice performance early if you know you will need versions in several languages or dialects, and owning the source files so later versions are easier. Our original work is on the [projects page](/en/projects).

Frequently Asked Questions
--------------------------

### Is automated dubbing really cheaper?

It is cheaper in direct cost, but the review and correction a serious work needs narrow the difference. For simple informational content the saving may be real.

### Can lip sync be done automatically?

Tools try, with varying results. In animation the mouth timing is often readjusted by hand for the final result.

### Which languages are most reliable in automated dubbing?

Quality varies between languages and changes over time; widely spoken languages are usually better than local dialects, and dialects need more human review. Test each language yourself before you rely on it.
